EndNote: Getting Started

EndNote Basics

Bibliographic management software makes it easy to collect and organize references to any type of information, from journal articles to multimedia files. The software also allows students and researchers to insert their citations into papers and format them for publication painlessly. EndNote is available from the D. Samuel Gottesman Library.

Get EndNote desktop software!

EndNote is available to registered users of the D. Samuel Gottesman Library who are affiliated with Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Download EndNote X9: 

Be sure to exit all Microsoft Office applications before installing EndNote. After installation, check Word to make sure EndNote toolbar is installed and activated.

Download older versions:

  • EndNote X8 for Windows
    • After installation, follow the on-screen prompts to upgrade to EndNote X8.2 (required for MS Word 2016 compatibility).
    • If the EndNote X8 install process gets stuck, rerun the installation and use the Custom Install option instead of Typical. When prompted to Select Features, deselect Install Direct Export Helper.
  • EndNote X8 for Macs
    • After installation, follow the on-screen prompts to upgrade to EndNoteX8.2 (required for MS Word 2016 compatibility).

Installation tips

Windows Installation 

  1. Download EndNoteX9.exe
  2. Double click the EndNoteX8.exe file
  3. Accept the default settings and agree to the license terms.
  4. When you open EndNote for the first time, follow the prompts to install program updates.

Macintosh Installation 

  1. After downloading, double click the EndNoteX9.dmg file.
  2. The installer should open on your desktop.
  3. Drag the EndNote Folder to the Applications folder on your Hard Drive.
  4. When you click on the EndNote icon in its folder in Applications,EndNote will walk you through the setup process.
  5. Accept the default settings and agree to the license terms.

Before updating to a new version of EndNote

  1. Check EndNote's Compatibility & Requirements page. The current version and one previous version is available for download.
  2. Make a backup copy of your library.  The easiest way to do this is to go to File > Compressed Library > Accept default settings. This will create a compressed version of your Library, including all file attachments. The file will have a .enlx extension.
